A Study on the Correlation between College Students' Draw-a-Story Test and their Psychological Well-being

Abstract
This study investigated the possibility of using the Draw-a-Story(DAS) test as a tool to analyze the psychological well-being of college students. The study participants were 427 college students residing in Daegu and Gyeongbuk province. The instruments were the Psychological Well-Being Scale(PWBS) by Ryff(1989) and the DAS Form A by Silver(1988). A reliability check was conducted for the internal consistency of the measurement. A correlation coefficient was calculated for the consistency between the raters. The data were analyzed using a cross-tabulation and correlation analysis. This study found the followings. First, a positive correlation was found between the psychological well-being and the DAS emotion scores and self-image scores; that is, psychological well-being was high when the scores of emotion and self-image were high. Second, both the DAS emotion and self-image scores showed a significant correlation with the psychological well-being. Third, in the stimulus drawings choice in relation to the level of psychological well-being, the group with high psychological well-being tended to draw a neutral child (stimulus drawing 2) and a chick (stimulus drawing 11) more than the group with low psychological well-being. The group with low psychological well-being tended to draw a dinosaur (stimulus drawing 10) and a castle (stimulus drawing 14) more than the group with high psychological well-being.
